Zauchensee-Flachauwinkel:

Snow, ski, sport, sun and fun – that is the description of a perfect ski day. Unfortunately the snow was missing for the whole month of December. Nevertheless, the ski area of Zauchensee-Flachauwinkel did an amazing job. The slopes were taken care of in the best way possible concerning the high temperatures. Arriving early in the morning, around 8.30 was the key for us, since the masses of skiers and tourists were not here yet and we could enjoy the slopes at their best. Zauchensee-Flachauwinkel is a large ski area that is even connected to other mountains like Flachauwinkel-Kleinarls via the ski bus “Zauchi”. So the many slopes are perfect for all kind of skiers. Nina, Melli, Andrea and I are of course “experts” ☺, that is why we enjoyed a lot of black pistes. As soon as the slightly slower tourists arrived in the area, even those were a little crowded though. That is why we decided to enjoy the great weather in the sun in the beach chairs in front of the “Burgstallhütte”. The owners of the hut – Franz and Regina – are great hosts and we had an amazing time with some Kaiserschmarrn, an Almpfandl, hot chocolate and schnapps. But remember, don´t drink and drive! We got back on the slopes after the “Einkehrschwung” (stop at the hut) and skied a little more, but soon it was too warm and the slopes were quite bad.

Coming back in the new year was definitely an awesome idea, because there was a lot of snow and Nina, Andrea and I were able to ski off-piste. The fresh snow was perfect for powdering. Of course it was also nicer for us because we could avoid the crowd and enjoy the nature. Nevertheless, be careful when skiing off-piste. It is technically not allowed and can be dangerous. We know the region very well and are experienced skiers, that is why we felt like we can deal with it.
